Things to Know:
Linear Measurement

Standard Measurement:
1 inch = about the length of a paperclip 1 foot = about the length of your notebook
1 yard = about the length of a child's arms when outstretched 1 mile = 4 times around a running track
1 foot = 12 inches 1 yard = 3 feet
1 mile = 5, 280 feet  


Metric Measurement:

1 millimeter = about the width of pencil lead 1 centimeter = about the width of your index finger
1 meter = about the length of a child's arms when outstretched 1 kilometer = around a city block
1 centimeter = 10 millimeters 1 meter = 100 centimeters
1 meter = 1,000 millimeters  


Students should also be able to use a ruler to measure down to 1/8 of an inch as well as measure in millimeters and centimeters.

Know that on a ruler 2/8 = 1/4 , 4/8 = 1/2 , 6/8 = 3/4 , 8/8 = 1 whole
